Blue Light Songwriter Showdown week 1

Last Monday Oct. 17 marked the first round of contestants for the Blue Light and 105.3′s Fall Songwriter showdown. Everyone brought their A-game, and the judges had a tough time deciding this week’s finalists. The outcome was Zack Wilkerson, Eric Palacios and Hayden Huse. After playing all three artists’ songs, listeners were asked to call in and vote for their fave. Voting is closed now, but Hayden Huse won the popular vote and came out on top. This means that Hayden will go into the finale on November 14th with an extra point. All three songwriters are in the finale. Finale will be judged by Larry Joe Taylor, Dave Perez of the Tejas Brothers and Clayton Landau of Six Market Boulevard and….me. Grand prize is an opening slot at the Larry Joe Taylor Texas Music Festival in April. If you missed the three finalists songs on the Red Dirt Rebel 105.3, you can check them out here!

Brandon Rhyder- In Studio

Brandon Rhyder played the Blue Light this past Friday, and as always he stopped by the Red Dirt Rebel studios to hang w us before the show. And this time he came bearing gifts! I always say what a classy stand up guy that Rhyder is, and he proved just that by showing his appreciation of Lubbock’s TEXAS COUNTRY station by bringing me this freeeeeking fabulous Brandon Rhyder Bud Light neon sign. Yep -he knows the way to this deejay’s heart. Be sure to check out the interview where yo ucan also listen to HIS version of “Hell’s Gates On Fire”, the song he and Josh Abbott wrote together.

Kalf Fry is finally here! It’s happening on Friday, and we are proud to be the OFFICIAL KALF FRY STATION. Josh Abbott Band AND Roger Creager playing! Can’t wait! In honor of Creager playing at Kalf Fry – I wanted to share this little video I dug up on his website! Not long ago – (well sometime this past Summer), Roger Creager and friends took a little fishing trip where Roger was…..wait for it…..attacked by a shark! And in this very dramatic clip, he lives to tell about it. Now that you are on the edge of your seats….here ya go!

It’s finally out today! The new Kyle Park album, and yes it’s a full length ALBUM – not an EP like he’s put out the past couple of times! Of course you’ve heard the new single “Make Or Break Me” on the Red Dirt Rebel 105.3. It’s the title track of the new album – uhhhh you guessed it – Make Or Break Me. And here’s the video for – yep – Make Or Break Me!

Don’t call them “BECK” and Cauthen

Wow – just when I thought there was really nothing dramam filled going on in the “scene” right now – I find THIS! Around here we love Beck and Cauthen. (oooops can’t call them that anymore.) You know – they have the song “Flatland” that describes Lubbock to a T. Welll – seems like somoeone did not like them using the name Beck. Yep, the singer Beck – and his panties are all in a wad. This is from the Beck and Cauthen facebook page explaining to their fans why they are changing their name to Sons of Fathers. (which i like better anyway,,,take that BECK!!)

Hello Beck & Cauthen fans –

We are changing our name from Beck & Cauthen to Sons of Fathers.

To our surprise, we got a letter last week from representatives of Beck, who asked us to change it. We don’t want to create confusion with Beck, or for that matter Jeff Beck, Glenn Beck, Beck’s beer, or any other Beck. We hope he listened to some tunes from the new album, also called ‘Sons of Fathers!’

It was a sign for us to change the name to something that included the whole band, not just a duo. We are all in this together and we all play a role. We used the phrase “Sons of Fathers” long before we wrote the song and changed the band name. It is our expression about the past, our families, our roots and who we are, good or bad, right or wrong.

Please follow us as we move over our to the new name:

Twitter: http://twitter.com/sonsoffathers
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Sons-of-Fathers/107791102636426

Look out for a new website but we’ll leave this one up in the meantime.

Right now, we’re focused on getting ready to play our second and third New York shows in October along with a few on the way up and on the way back. We hope to see you out there!

Sons of Fathers, it’s who we are and we all stand for it.

David Beck, Paul Cauthen & co.

Hell’s Gates On Fire- you can help!

So you’ve heard the new song that we’ve been playing from Josh Abbott Band “Hell’s Gates On Fire”. It was actually written by Josh Abbott AND Brandon Rhyder a few months ago. Josh has put the song up on his website for you to downlaod for a small donation. All he is asking is for $1 a download. However, you can definitely donate more. All proceeds go to help victims of the recent wildfires. If you are still not sold on helping out – watch this video and I am sure you will change your mind real quick!!
